Later I went to see a show by German photographer Herlinde Kölbl, who is finally getting the attention she deserves. I really enjoyed the exhibition, and I was deeply affected by a series called "Jewish Portraits" with comments from the people she photographed. Anyone who compares the way Israel defends itself to Nazi methods should be reminded - without forgetting the historic situation of the Palestinian people - why this defence is so necessary. We simply can never forget that the Nazis systematically killed 1.2 million Jewish children in the concentration camps, it can't be shrugged off, or put in relation to anything else.
On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me...lamb hash. A leg of lamb is a bit much for two, even hearty, eaters. So, on day two I remembered the meat mincer I inherited from my aunt Fränzi, possibly the only consummate cook in my family. I got it down from the top of the kitchen cupboard and put it together - a fine piece of craftsmanship. With a large onion, I put all the leftover meat (try not to think of it as lamb - bah..bahh...) through and cooked it with the remaining gravy. It was lovingly accompanied by the tried and tested hasselback potatoes, and lamb's lettuce for company.
