Sunday was a day that invited life on the terrace, where the sun is so strong all day long that the idea of getting a marquee grew in our minds...spend, spend, spend...Today it rains, good for the garden.
Sunday afternoon my marvellously recovered Mum suggested an outing to a hillside cafe she knew as a child. It is rather more grand and touristy now than in the days when she would visit an aunt and an uncle who were "in service" as gamekeeper and cook with a local chocolate manufacturer (yes! some real "upstairs, downstairs" factor in my background). Mum had asparagus and my prosecco with Apérol, which she loved. I had Sachertorte for/instead of lunch.
In the evening we had sauerkraut with boiled potatoes and liver sausage cooked in the sauerkraut (which is cooked on a fried onion, seasoned with salt, a couple of bay leaves and a handful of juniper berries and has some water added to it) rather than fried separately - keeping the fat content down.
