Making beautiful days

You might think that a couple, living in a small town like mine, with not that much excitement, no work, no grandchildren, and gray winter days, is the stuff prize-winning depressing novels are made of. But hey, there is water in this glass!
"The Opposite of Grimdark is Hopepunk" - hopepunk is a word a young woman coined to counter all the negative vibes in her life. Apparently it has become a thing that includes all the climate emergency resistance and any other movements that are deemed to be pointless but bring together forces of change. A good thing.
Anyway,  my own private hopepunk feelings come with the joys of being retired: I don't have any pressing engagements, my time is my own, I can travel when I want or stay home on the sofa. I enjoy cooking and baking, even hanging up the washing is no sweat.
I get so relaxed that I might forget to dress until midday - yesterday I opened the door to the postman in my clown's dressing gown and felt a bit embarrassed, so I pretended to have a cold. He said "I have the flu, too!" Poor man - he still has to go to work. Three cheers if you're a pensioner!

Last night I made this celeriac and parsley root soup with a bit of cream and Aleppo pepper. The recipe says don't blend it electrically, pass it through a sieve. The little green thing is a stale roll toasted with blue cheese in the oven...no waste, and it tastes fine.

A major selling point of life in my little town is the speedy travel to Munich: meeting my friends, shopping ( I don't buy everything online), cafes, photos by full moon

For the weekend I baked a healthy apple cake. I used this recipe, but instead of putting the apples on top, I grated them and mixed them in with the dough, and baked the cake in a loaf tin. Looks even healthier this way, and is very juicy.

Sooo gut. Reicht für zwei.

Here's an idea for getting rid of leftovers. I had some boiled potatoes and a rather tired aubergine lying around and leftover gorgonzola in the fridge. Slice the aubergine and cook it in plenty of olive oil on low heat, with the lid on. Then layer the sliced potatoes, the cheese (I added a ball of mozzarella because I am addicted to cheese) and the aubergines and bake in the oven until the grated parmesan on top is crispy.
So good. Feeds two.

  2. I fully agree! Retirement is a blissful state (mainly). For me this includes hanging out in my pyjamas all day long, if I feel so inclined.:) After three years of retirement, and only working freelance a few times a year, I still cannot believe I deserve this (I know I do, though!)
Your leftover cuisine is to die for, as always!

Obwohl. Der Apfelkuchen? Mit Schlagobers drauf? Schließlich gibt es dehnbare Jogginghosen!

  5. I understand you perfectly, Ilse, and I totally agree with what you say about the relaxed feeling of being retired. Time for everything, even for cooking, although it is not my favorite hobby!
Your dishes always look so delicious that I would like to live in the house next door to you to enjoy a little of what you show us here.

  7. Mal vorsichtig...

Habe ein wundervolles 2020 and 02.02.2020 as well, das wünscht dir Myri
