Luckily the 5-year old princess and the 8-year-old intellectual are used to bad weather, their Lake District grandmother does not even discuss weather, according to the old English mantra "there is no bad weather, only wrong clothes". Lots of indoor activities, and today a visit to the Science Museum. I am staying at home finishing off bits of work before we bravely set off for the mountains tomorrow. This strange weather we are having produces some amazing compensations like rainbows, thunder and lightning. And an excuse to sit around and eat cake.

The reward
So geht's:
200g weiche Butter, 200 g Zucker, 3 Eigelb, Vanillezucker, Prise Salz, 50ml Sahne und die abgeriebene Schale von einer Bio-Zitrone verrühren. 150g Mehl und 50g Speisestärke, und einen Teelöffel Backpulver dazurühren. Den Teig in eine gefettete und bemehlte Springform streichen, 500g kleingeschnittenen (geschälten sage ich jetzt nicht, das ist eine Beleidigung) Rhabarber darauf legen, etwas reindrücken. Bei 180°C im Elektroofen, Gas Stufe 2, eine Stunde backen. Dann Kuchen raus, etwas abkühlen lassen, das Baiser drauf und noch mal 15 Minuten rein.
Das Baiser war kinderleicht! 3 Eiweiß mit Prise Salz steifschlagen, 150 g Zucker reinrieseln lassen, dann 1TL Speisestärke reinheben. Ein Erfolgserlebnis!
Mix together 200g softened butter, 200g sugar, 3 egg yolks, vanilla sugar, pinch of salt, zest of half an organic lemon (I used a lime)and 50ml of cream (I used buttermilk). Add 150g plain flour and a tsp of baking powder, plus 50g cornflour. Make the meringue with 3 beaten egg-whites and a pinch of salt, slowly add 150g caster sugar and fold in a tablespoon of cornflour. Put the mix in a lined or greased and floured cake tin, lightly press the cut rhubarb pieces on top and bake for an hour in a gas oven set at 2, or at 180°C. Then slap the meringue you prepared earlier on top of the slightly cooled down cake and bake for another 15 minutes, until it’s lovely and brown. What a result! Roll on the visitors and the weekend.

Besuch
This Saturday, we are expecting Lola and family on their first visit to Munich. Lola is a very dear friend I first met in Seville when I was looking for somewhere to live. An ad in the Green Centre pointed me in her direction, and after a lonely three months, I had the best time in Seville and Córdoba and Zahora. The rest is history - she came to London, lived with me at Tremlett, met The Man, had children and grew a lovely wisteria. Luckily, our balcony door finally got fixed yesterday so now we can bask in the sunshine. But the repairman gave me such a look when he saw the kitchen floor that, in terror, I knelt down and practically licked the kitchen clean after he left, leaving also a flock of footprints all over. We are clean people, but we live near one of the dirtiest roads in Germany, so we tend to give up sometimes. Anyway, now it's all nice and ready for the visitors.

Der Badetag
Mittwoch, Mutters Stammtischtag, ist für mich ein Tag zum einkaufen wie man nur in einer Kleinstadt einkauft, nämlich an jeder Ecke mit jemanden ratschend. Zum spaziergehen, zum Wäsche bügeln (etwas was ich ausschließlich für meine Mutter mache), oder um den Balkon von Vogelfutter und Blüten zu bekehren. Gestern war es ein Tag zum Schwitzen und Baden gehen. Eigentlich mein erster, wenn man von dem kurzen Eintauchen im Steinsee Ende April absieht, das weniger ein Schwimmen war als ein "kreisch...uiuiui...brrr...". Noch ist kaum jemand am blau-grünen Steinsee-Ostufer ausser mir, einem kaltwassererprobten Seniorenehepaar und ein paar kreischenden Teenies. Meine Schwester und Kaltwasser-Badegenossin badet ja inzwischen im lauen Portugal. Es war möglich, mehrere Meter zu schwimmen ohne zu schreien, und nachher konnte ich mich in der Sonne luft-trocknen. Die Wiesen waren voller Pferde und Hahnenklee, der Himmel noch blau mit Wölkchen. Es war himmlisch. Heute regnet es wieder.
Wednesday is Mother's day, the day for shopping and chatting, for ironing, for clearing the balcony of birdseed and stray blossoms. It is also my day for communing with nature, and yesterday offered the first opportunity for a real swim - unlike the first swim of the season Luisa and I had in April, reminiscent of the cold, cold Women's Pond. At this time of year, the local lake is almost deserted apart from the tough old couple who swim every day of the year, a few noisy teens on bikes and myself. I had my almost real swim and sun-dried myself afterwards. The meadows were full of horses and buttercups, the sky blue with little puffy clouds - it was heavenly. Ein leichtes Abendessen
A really lovely Whitsun weekend that did everything right - the sun, the food, the family adventures (I think Luisa should be in Portugal by now) and outings, the DVD couch potato events, eating out under chestnut trees with friends and tonight a little cooking action. I made a soup of green asparagus and an egg-fluffy royale. The waffles are really easy: mix two large potatoes, boiled and mashed, two eggs, some milk, 100g flour, 50g melted butter to make a thick dough and cook spoonfuls of it in the waffle iron. If you don't have a waffle iron, forget it and eat a piece of toast.

Thoughts for a rainy day
The foto is courtesy of Dave Many of my friends are getting to the point where the R(etirement)-word is rearing its soothing head, and I hear people ask things like "can you imagine not working any longer? what will you do with yourself?" HELLO?? Is there anyone who is not longing for the day when work is finished for good? As a freelance worker I am of course quite used to organising my time, and instead of chats with colleagues, which admittedly were the best thing about employment, I often meet friends for lunch or a cappuccino. What is so difficult about imagining a time without deadlines? without Excel charts? without guilt about spending hours reading blogs instead of doing market? I can see myself improving my cooking, making my own pasta, having people over for lunch, perfecting my fotos. There is my bike, there are lakes and swimming pools, and there will be all those friends who have also packed in work for good. Sadly, I will never get round to reading War and Peace, because with my pension I will never quite stop working.

Einfach schee
Während meine Mutter ihre wöchentliche Kaffeerunde besuchte, tummelte ich mich auf dem umliegenden Lande, trotz Sonnenmangel ein wahres Wunder an Bioblumenwiesen. Holte mir auch wieder Kresse, die dann am Abend zu einer Kartoffel-Kressesuppe verarbeitet wurde - ihr kennt ja die Herstellung: drei, vier gewürfelte Kartoffeln, genügend Brühe um sie zu bedecken, ein Stänglein Lauch, pürieren, eine große Handvoll Kresse rein und einen Schlag saure Sahne. Dazu einen Ziegenfrischkäse mit Paprika vom Wochenmarkt.
Whilst waiting for my Mum to fully enjoy her weekly coffee session, I cavorted through the spring meadows, full of flowers like they used to be. Organic farming rocks! I picked my usual handful of water cress by the stream and made a potato and watercress soup, with a dash of sour cream stirred in after puréeing the soup. On the plate: a paprika goat cheese from our weekly market.

Ein Schoko-Traum
My cooking inspiration is suffering from an apathy induced by this May that makes us wear fleeces and raincoats. I can't seem to get anything right in the kitchen. All we do is watch Mick's dad's box set of The Wire and dream of chocolate brownies I can't be bothered to make.Rezept für die Brownies:
100g Mehl
80g Zucker, am besten braunen Rohrzucker
100g Butter
2 Eier
Teelöffel Backpulver
eine Prise Salz
und eine kleine Tasse Milch zu einem Teig verrühren.
eine Handvoll Walnüsse, zerkleinert (z.B.Nüsse in ein Geschirrtuch gewickelt leicht mit Nudelholz beklopfen. Ich sagte: leicht!)
150g Schokolade mit der Butter in einer Schüssel über kochendem Wasser schmelzen, in den Teig rühren, Walnüsse dazu. In Papierförmchen in eine Muffin-Form gießen (halbvoll) und bei ca. 180° ca. 20 Minuten backen oder bis der Zahnstocker beim Testen sauber rauskommt.

Diese Bäckerei hier ist in Highgate, nur wenige 100m von Archway, wo ich früher wohnte. Die Kuchen mögen in Deutschland besser, weniger pappsüß und traditioneller sein, aber aussehen tun sie einfach unwiderstehlich. **************This bakery is in Highgate, a few hundred meters but a world away from Archway...cakes in Germany may be better, less cloyingly sugary and more dignified, but these definitely lead in the mouth-watering stakes.
