Ein bisserl Kulturschock

Image
"Er schüttelt seinen Körper und singt immer wieder I'm transforming, I'm vibrating – look at me now . Dann hebt er förmlich ab: I'm glowing, I'm flying – look at me now . Cave ist nicht der Baum im Stur...

Erdäpfelkas und ein Hauch von New Orleans

Image
*** This was one of the best street music events I have seen in Munich. The band are local heroes who play in various combinations and an absolutely vast range of sounds. Everybody was in a good mood, the music was irresistible. Also, you don't often get this combination of music and street food in our ...

Meine musikalische Laufbahn

Image
In case you were wondering how I got into yodelling: In 1978, I was a bass player in a London punk band . We played mainly in pubs and on the backs of lorries on "Rock against Racism" demos. But we were Big in Germany, played big venues and even made a record with Munich indie label Trikont! 2012, in einem kleinen Dorf in Bayern, singt ein werdendes Jodeltrio in meiner Küche Zwei meiner damaligen Bandmitglieder machen jetzt irische Volksmusik . Der Lauf der Welt! 2012 - in a little Bavarian village, a budding yodelling trio is singing in my kitchen Two other members of the Resisters are now into Irish folk music. This is how musica...

Attwenger (click on title to listen)

I forgot to mention that last Friday, which happened to be the last balmy summer evening, I finally saw Attwenger live in a charming garden in Munich's cosmopolitan Glockenbach neighbourhood. I love these two incredibly talented but whacky Austrian musicians who cover just about any musical style with their combination of accordeon, jew's (or jaw's ...

Blast from the past

Image
I scanned lots of pictures this weekend (in fact until my scanner blew up) for a birthday book present. Some of them were actually quite good, taken with my old Pentax on film. This one is for Chris - hello out there! Terry and Chris, third (?) Womad festival, Clevedon near Bristol, in 1986

Life gets in the way of lifestyle

Sometimes life moves too fast to cook, and the only solution is spaghetti al pesto, with a fantasy salad, acompanied not by wine, for a change, but lemon tea.

Essen.Wandern.Singen.Tanzen.

May is starting well, with a walk up Taubenstein, a little Mountain with an organic farm restaurant and a traditional May 1st folk session. Nice food, too. In the evening, there was a May 1st trade union party in Marienplatz, with a home-grown Ska band, Bluekilla. You'd have to be dead not to dance to their music. Saturday afternoon, after the gorgeous fleamarket all over Haidhausen, I met up with fellow flickristas in Ruffini, my local café. Now I am off to meet the family and go out for lunch. La vita é bella!

Too old to die young

Image
"Too old to die young". Our toilet...

A tourist day out

Today was the day München decided it was 850 years old. And oh my did they lay on the party!I am glad I went - it was cheesy as hell with all the old Trachten (real and dubious national costume) wheeled out and bad yodelling and everyone drinking beer and eating Bratwurst. But man, it was fun. I started by cycling across town to the Hofbräuhaus, where the alternative Bavarian music scene was jamming in the beer garden, with a band called "Landlergschwister" releasing its album. The Hofbräuhaus beergarden is one of the best kept secrets in town. It's lovely, cool, green and the food is cheap (unlike that poncy place opposite the opera, where a glass of not very nice Austrian Zweigelt costs 5 €...Anyway, the music was sweet and the atmosphere was party. And then I just cycled past the giant pink cake, made by a local Bakery chain with the help of child volunteers and the rafters who bring down the wooden rafts from the source of the river Isar (nowadays o...

Boogie nights and garden parties

Image
In the end, it was Bill Callahan at the Orange House, a grungy youth clubby venue we both love, it is so very un-München. He was preceded by a surprise guest, Scottish singer Alasdair Roberts, who turned out to be brilliant. Bill C. was inscrutable but his voice cuts to the quick (wherever that may be). The only information he shared with the audience was "We had a big night in Vienna last night". Aha. We boldly took a taxi to the lovely birthday party at 11.30, with a German driver who used to fly helicopters in Cambodia for the US army and said he doesn't want his sons to become soldiers. And on Saturday, a gourmet date at Bine's where everybody brought some food and we sat in the garden, defying the odd rain drop.

An embarrassment of riches

Tonight, there are four bands Mick and I would be interested in seeing, with names like Vampire Weekend, Melt Banana, Awesome Color and Dinosaur Jr., as well as Bill Callahan of Smog fame. There is also a birthday party. After complaining sometimes that there are no parties in München, now I feel sheepish. And anyway, one of the reasons to escape from London was that I wanted to curl up quietly on the sofa and act my age, instead of being forced to have fun fun fun. I think I was wrong. Fun fun fun is good. But curling up on the sofa is good, too. I am now five years younger than John Peel when he died, and he was still listening to demo tapes and running his show at Glasto to the very end. There is no excuse, while we are alive.
